Have a look:
To assist the non-gamers, this long play homage is filled with characters who are unique to Sony Playstation games. By having the hero be a gamer – well, having had a couple of gamers explain this to me already – its the ultimate in fan love.
And that makes it brilliant marketing. It takes the unique branding elements and makes the consumer the hero.
Think to yourself, all you brand folks out there – aside from beer ads, and a few sports ads, have you ever made it about your fans? Maybe you should.

As amazing as this ad is, I feel that Sony missed an opportunity. The marketing for this was brilliant. They even gave sneak first 30 second videos to most of the popular video gaming websites (IGN is a notable one) and did a pre-viral campaign using social media 1 week before release. However, the manner in which they teased the fans led us (me being a fan) to expect more. Sony is expected to release the PSVita sometime either late this year or next year: a handheld gaming competitor to Nintendo (and now the iPad/iPhone). Sony also has a ton of new amazing new offers. All they did was tell us about a price cut.
They should have saved this for the next product release. I probably will have forgotten this by the time they want to start really driving hype (especially for “Michael’s”) about PSVita.
Big hype, awesome delivery, missed opportunity.
Beautiful build, Jon, bringing expertise I don’t have. I love the idea of saving this ad for the next product release. I’m sure they had their reasons – the huge Christmas selling season is critical as you either gain marketshare or don’t during the pack “equipment purchase season” and that may be it. Nonetheless bringing new news with compelilng creative is always a wise idea!
